Q: Do you shoot film or digital?
A: I usually shoot digital, but if you are interested in special film options such as infrared, or unique images from vintage or alternative cameras, I'd be happy to discuss them with you.
Q: Is there a limit to how many changes of outfit I can have per session?
A: Nope! I charge for my time – how you want to use it is up to you.
Q: What kinds of editing do you provide with the standard package?
A: Every session includes a CD with proof-quality (you'll be able to see them on your computer just fine, but they won't print well) images. If you choose to order the printable CD, all your images will be edited to optimize the lighting and colors, and black and white and sepia options will be included.
Q: What kinds of special photo enhancements can I get?
A: You can choose skin smoothing, selective color, "hand" tinting that looks like old-fashioned painted photographs, new backgrounds, borders and special effects for an editing fee of $30/hour. Feel free to ask for an estimate!
Q: Do you have a studio?
A: No, if I had to pay rent, I'd have to charge you more! I can come to you or I'd be happy to meet you in one of Portland's wonderful public spaces.
Q: How does the collage creation process work?
A: You send me pictures of the subject and some information about them – hobbies, favorite colors, anything that gives me a sense of their personality. When I have a design ready, I'll mock up a rough version and email it to you for approval.
Q: Do you use original photos in your collages?
A: No, I think family photos are too precious to cut up! My favorite way to receive images is as high quality (300 dpi) .jpg files. If you don't have a way to digitize your photos, I'll be happy to scan your originals and return them to you. I will also accept a high-quality color copy.
Q: What kind of photos work well?
A: The best photographs are clear without harsh shadows or anything blocking the view. If you're not sure whether your favorite photographs are suitable, feel free to consult me.
Q: How long does it take to complete a collage?
A: Usually a few weeks. If you need your collage by a certain date, please let me know and I'll do my best to accommodate you. Expect waiting times to be significantly longer close to the winter holidays. Feel free to contact me for a time estimate!
Q: What materials do you use in your collages?
A: I use your photographs, my photographs, reproductions of old book pages, decorative papers, found objects, acrylic paint, anything I can glue to the canvas! Finished pieces are coated with a UV-resistant varnish.
Q: How much does shipping cost?
A: Within the U.S., $8.95 for Priority shipping. Outside the U.S., contact me with your details, and I'll let you know.
Q: What if I decide I don't like the artwork and want to return it?
A: If you wish to return your artwork, you must contact me within two weeks of receipt for return authorization. If you receive authorization and return the artwork in its original condition I will refund the purchase price. However, I do reserve the right to sell the artwork to someone else.
Q: Who owns the copyright to the commissioned artwork? Can I reproduce it?
A: I retain the copyright to my work, and reserve the right to use it in my portfolio and for promotional purposes. However, I will not license an artwork containing your family photos for any other purpose. You may not use your commissioned artwork for any commercial purpose, but if you want to use it for a non-profit purpose such as family holiday cards, contact me for approval.
Q: Are collages made with archival materials? How long can I expect my collage to last?
A: The majority of the papers I use are archival, however many of my collages include vintage papers of uncertain origin. I regard the aging of these items as part of the artistic nature of the piece. If you wish to have your collage include only archival materials, let me know and I will be happy to accommodate you. With proper care, your collage should last a lifetime.
Q: How do I care for my collage?
A: Like a color photograph, these collages should be hung away from direct sunlight to prevent fading. They also should not be hung in areas with high humidity such as bathrooms. To clean, wipe gently with a damp cloth.
Q: Can I get prints of my collage?
A: Yes, you can order archival giclee prints on Somerset Velvet paper printed with Epson Ultrachrome professional archival inks.
